EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING GRANTS FOR SCHOOLS Mr. T. Forsyth (chairman) presided at the monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board yesterday. There were present: Messrs. E. H. Penny, R. A. Wright, M.P., R. M'Callum, M.P., W. T. Grundy, J. J. Clark, A. J. White, T. Moss, E. P. Rishworth, <3. London, C. J. Harkness, and W. H. Field, M.P. The receipts since last meeting of the board amounted to £29,346 7s. The payments made in accordance with Government regulations were £18,792 18s. Id.; general payments, £10,911 3s. Bd.; total amount of payments now authorised, .£29,704 Is. 9d.; cash in bank on March 31 amounted to 688953 15s. 9d.; eash in bank on current account on April 16, .£5418 16s. 3d.; amount on deposit, £14,000. The Government grants due amounted to £6787 16s. Id.; expenditure for the current year on the maintenance of buildings, £4770 2s. Id.; estimated cost of works authorised (including authorisations dated March 16), £7610 Cs. 3d. Government Grants Made, A letter was received from the Education Department consenting to in additional grant being made in connection with the purchase of a school site at Mornington. Notification was also received from the Department of grants for temporary accommodation at Lyall Bay, Soatoun, Muritai, Te Aro, and Martinborough. The application for a grant for temporary accommodation at Karori was refused. The chairman intimated that further action was proposed in regard to Karori. An application to the Department for a grant for a new school at Paraparaumu waa declined for the time being, and that for Lansdowne (additions to site), it was intimated would have to stand over until the end-of the lease. Committee’s Recommendations. The following recommendations of the Executive Committee were approved:— "School district boundaries, KilbirnieRoseneath.—That pending completion of the South Miramar school, the southern boundary of the new Hataitai district be the present line separating Roseneath and Kilbirnie, and that the northern boundary be: from Town Belt along centre of Victoria Road, to Thane Road, along northern boundary of section 80, D.P. 475, across KilbUrnie Road, along northern boundary of section 102, D.P. 475, across Grafton Road, and along northern boundaries of sections 4 and 12, D.P. 475, to Evans Bay.” “Silverstream. —That the owner of the field to the east of the railway line be requested to name a price for five acres, and that in the event of no quotation being received the board proceed to obtain authority to take under the Bubl'ic Works Act.” "Kaiwarra.—That the lease of the Methodist Church, Kaiwarra, be approved on the condition that it is available un’.lil the new school is completed. That the fencing arrangements for the protection o? the children be approved. “Te Aro Site.—That the board point out to the Department that the quotation for labour appears to be considerably below that generally ruling, which in some places reaches as high 'as ss. or 6s. per cubic yard; that city engingineor be asked if he will be good enough to state what he considers a fair price for inch excavation as the board requires, and submit his estimate to the Department. Further, that the board again urge the Department to take ad-, vantage of the prison labour now available, as otherwise the work will be accomplished at much greater cost.” “Counter-signature of teachers’ cheques. —That, in order to simplify the system, of payment, the Bank of New Zealand be authorised to pay teachers’ salary cheques on the countersignature of head teachers.” "Use of schools out of school hours.— . That in certain specific cases the secretary write to the committees concerned pointing out the necessity for proper supervision and care where the use of the school outside of school hours .has been authorised.
