THEFT FROM THE RAILWAY
TWO ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.
'From Our Own Correspondent! Palmerston North, April 8 On February 18 last, Messrs. Stubbs and Co., of the Palmerston North Hosiery Factory, consigned by rail to Messrs. M-teky Logan, and Caldwell, Ltd., M ellington, four cases of hosiery valued at X'slB. The cases were put into a closed wagon with other goods, and the van was closed' with the ordinary metal seal used bv the Department. As the goods were received on a Saturday, when the wirds were congested, the Railway Demirtment sent them down to the Av-a-nuni siding, where they remained until they- were picked up by the train lor Wellington on the following Monday. TTnon the van being opened at Wellingfo„ H was found that three of the cases with contents valued at ,£419 16s. were missing. Inquiries by the police resulted ; n two of the cases being discovered intact on the premises of Henry Levi Wolland, and on being asked how they came into his possession he stated that they had been takou to his place in his c.T-t by himself and .two or three others. A subsequent search resulted in 11 pairs of hosiery similar to the missing goods being found on the premises of’Francis Cassidy, a railway shunter, and he was arrested along with wol''tlic two accused were charged with the theft at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, and after formal evidence had been given they were both committed for trial. Bail was allowed accused in £5OO each and two sureties each of £250.
