TASMANIAN APPLES
INORDINATELY LONG VOYAGE COMPLAINED OF.
London, April G.
Apple importers are complaining of the inordinate length of the Boorara’s voyage with the first cargo of Tasmanian apples. The steamer is not expected to arrive till the middle of May, making the voyage one of about eighty days. Importers consider that apples should not be shipped by vessels making such long voyages. They fear that if later ships make equally protracted voyages, their apples will arrive when the market is glutted with soft fruit.
Mr. A. Ashbolt (Agent-General for Tasmania) has purchased a Dutch steamer of 2500 tons deadweight, subject to alterations complying with the requirements of the Australian Navigation Act. The purchase price is considerably lower than for any other vessel offering. Negotiations for a second steamer have been postponed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
