WELSH COAL
THE PURCHASE FOR NEW ZEALAND SHIPMENT NOW ON THE WATER A cablegram published yesterday reported the purchase of 150,000 tons of AVelsh coal on behalf of the New Zealand Railway Department. The Prime Minister stated yesterday that lie had no into the details of this purchase. The High Commissioner had bought 30,000 tons of AVelsh coal tor the Government some time ago, and one shipload of this coal was already on the water. The Government has not yet received information as to the price paid for the larger quantity of coal. Shipment is expected to be spread over a considerable period. • The AVelsh coal will be very expensive by the time it reaches New Zealand ports, but owing to its high quality It will be less costly in use than seme of the inferior coal that the Government has bought nearer home. The purchase of coal in Britain for the New Zealand railways is due, of course, to the reduced output of the New Zealand mines, and to' the uncertainty of future supplies from fhe local sources.
