FUNDS FOR WAR RELIEF

INCREASE IN TEMPORARY GRANTS REFUNDS BY OTHER SOCIETIES Tho financial position of the War Relief Association of Wellington is shown in the annual report, which states: “Teniporay grants during the year under review (£15,632) exceeded the total of the preceding two years (£15,293). Refunds by other societies (£4106) as compared with £537 in 1916, discloses the exceedingly heavy amount of work carried out —party resultant upon the military and geographical position—on behalf of other kindred bodies; whilst the gross expenditure (fund 'A’ £5556, fund ‘B’ £15,324) of £20,880 is nearly equal to the aggregate of the preceding two years. It is pleasing to note as evidence of careful administration, and in view of the imperative necessity of judicious expenditure of your funds, that of the gross expenditure for the year only £6976 l>ecoines a charge against capital account (fund "A" £2987, fund 'B' £3989). The total contributions amounted to £1069 in 1920, os compared with- £2745 in 1919 —the difference being mainly accounted for by the transfer in 1919 of £1604 from the trustees of the Countess of Liverpool Fund. The total funds since the inception of. the association amount to £129,323 2s. 2d., and the total expenditure £61,725 10s. Refunds by other societies again show a heavy increase. Comparing revenue. from this source in 1916 with 1920 the figures are: £537 in 1916 to £4106 in 1920, an increase of 765 per cent., whilst repayments by applicants £7O in 1916 to £7OO in 1920 have increased by 1000 per cent. Of the "total funds, no less than 11.047 per cent, is composed of refunds from all sources (£14.287, or, including interest, £12,485) the total becomes £26,772, and the percentage 20.701.' The total administrative cost under all headings (£8362) amounts to less than onethird of the latter amount, and this despite the fact that, although the utmost economy has -been practised, the stationery account alone is nearly .£lOOO —this is explained- when it ia stated that more than 87.000 letters and telegrams have been received and dispatched since January 1, 1917.”
