RAILWAY OFFICERS’ INSTITUTE

The following resolutions were carried at a special general meeting of members of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute: — "That this meeting of the members of the IVellington branch of’the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute calls Vpon the Prime Minister to give effect at once to the request made weeks ago for the Railway Commission to sit again to fix tho increase necessary in salaries owing to the large increase in the cost of living that has taken place since the last agreement was made with the Minister of Railways; and, further, takes strong exception to the question of salaries being left to the Uniformity Committee or any other board on which railway officers have not their own representatives.’’ "That this meeting enters an emphatic protest against the practice of the Department in delaying action in cases where appellants have had their appeal cases upheld by the railway appeal boards; points out that many months have elapsed since many of these cases were heard; and urges the Minister of Railways to at once cause a cessation of such utterly unfair treatment, and personally dispose of all cases hoard before he leaves for England.’’ “That tho attention of tho Executive Committee bo drawn to the fact that at the present time officers at Lambtori and at other stations are working overtime (in some cases overtime worked by individual officers since the operation of the agreement exceeds 356 hours), and that the executive be requested to make representations to have the spirit of the agreement entered into with the Department given effect to at once.” (Note: The agreement provides for time off for overtime worked in excess of 38 hours u week in main centres, and 48 hours a week at other stations.)
