WAIRARAPA NOTES
At a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Carterton on Friday, before Mr. Free. S.M., a youth named William E. A. Atkinson pleaded' guilty to the theft of money and a rolled gold watch, belonging to R. S. Gallon, and with converting a Ford motor-car, belonging to A. C. Gallon, to his own use. Accused was employed on Mr. Gallon’s farm, and took a hurried departure in the early hours of the morning of February 1Atkinson was subsequently arrested at Palmerston North, and is also- wanted at Hawera. On the theft charge, accused was convicted and fined £5, in default fourteen days’ ■ imprisonment; and for converting tho motor-car to his own use was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. The information laid by the Board or Trade against T. S. Arcus for using cement in development ivork without first obtaining a permit was dismissed, tho evidence proving that the work—a fence —had been put in hand prior to the regulation being gazetted in June last. Michael Martin, for tho theft of a bag and cycle pump, valued at ss. 6d., was convicted and fined 40. and costs. Messrs. R. J. Cfinv’"nn, G. A. I'airbrother, and F. H. Wise were granted land agents’ licenses at Carterton on Friday. On account of health reasons, Mr. J. Martin has resigned his position as a Martinborough representative on Itho Wairarapa Electric Power Board. The Featherston County Council met at Martinborough on Friday. Tho ranger reported having impounded-ninety head of stock during the month. Mr. S. N. M'Laren wrote concerning land that ratepayers had. agreed to transfer to the council to provide access to the new bridges at Pohara, and asked that a road which had been- in use for twenty years be legalised, and that certain exchanges be made.—The matter was left to Councillors A. D. M'Leod and D. Cameron, with power to move to secure the land under the Public Works Act if necessary. It was resolved to. confer with representatives of tho Wairarapa South County Council in the matter of the application of G. A. C. Elkington to have his property of 3466 acres in the Pahaoa riding transferred to the Wairarapa county, on the ground of geographical position. No action was taken in the application of five settlers asking for the removal of a gate on Hikawera Road. A communication from A. K. Hansen, Moron. Greytown, regarding damage by water to the road near his property was referred to the councillor for the riding. The Public Works Department wrote, approving of plans and the expenditure of £BOO on the Rnakokopotuna Bridge. Plans and specifications were also approved for the expends ture of £1 for £1 on the Hikawera Road. Councillors Camcron and Gillies were appointed to deal with leasing a section at Birch Ilill for a roadman’s whare, and Councillors J. Martin and Cameron are to report, on the matter of a cottage and paddock on the Martin-borougli-Pohara Road. Tenders are to be called for two extra rooms to the whare at Turanganui. The fender of Messrs. Gray and Beatty at 19s. lOd. per yard was accepted for metaling the Hikawera Road, and Mr. E. G. Thorn's at 12s. 6d. per yard for metalling a cutting. A grant of £25 was made to the county central school library. The tender of Messrs. Watson and Johnson was accepted for repairs to a cottage at Kaliutara. It was resolved to grant a bonus to the driver of the White motor truck, in consideration of the manner in which he had looked after the vehicle. It was resolved to write off a number of outstanding rates. At a special meeting orders were passed authorising a ferry building loan of ten per cent.; allocating tho cost of works on the district and Rimutaka. roads, and on Yankee White cutting.
