SENIOR CADETS
THE TRENTHAM TOURNEY BOXING AND SHOOTING CONTESTS The contests in connection with the secondary schools Senior Cadet district championship tournament excited keen interest at Trentham on Monday. The standard in shooting was generally high, and won warm praise from Major P. B. Henderson, M.C., N.Z.S.C., who was in charge of the musketry course. No fewer than four boys secured the possible, and a “shoot-off” had to be held to determine priority of place. This was in the grouping competition, where possibles were put on by Corporal A. S. Thompson (Marlborough), Sergeant J. M. Coltman (Auckland Technical College), Corporal C. W. Cayzer (Otago Boys’ High School), and Corporal W. H. (Th limes High School). In the "shoot-off the results were: Thompson (possible), 1; Coltman. 2- . Much interest was taken in the fallingplate competition. Competitors were given five plates and live rounds of ammunition, the time allowed to hit and knock down the plates was 50 seconds. If they were knocked down in 30 seconds an additional 10 points were allowed; if in 40 seconds, 5 points were allowed. Corporal R. Drummond (Mnsterton Hum School) and Sergeant R. S. Johnstone (Southland Boys’ High School) secured the possible in the above match. In the final Drummond secured four hue with 5 rounds, and took first place- Johnstone, however, won the aggregate with 55 points; Drummond was second with 50. In tho teams matches in the falling plates competition Otago won the fi 11 " 1 - Results: Wellington v. Otago, Otago won; Auckland v. Canterbury, Canterbury won. Final: Canterbury v. Otago, Otago (secured 12 plates with 44 rounds), 1; Canterbury (secured 14 plates with 54 rounds), 2. . The opening of the boxing competitio took place in the evening in the Church of England institute, and fifty matches in the different weights made a full evening’s programme, which lasted over two hours and a quarter. The contests were keen, animated, and vigorous. Practically every secondary in New Zealand was represented, and points for the District All-round Championship were awarded on each bout: two for a win. one for a loss, losers for a specially good or ’ plucky display receiving an extra half point. The schools competed agninsone another, and interest was keen. Semifinals were reached in the fly ’ bantam, and feather weighte, and the first round was completed in the ligh , welter, and middle weight, competitions. In the paper weights the final was reached and for the heavys the i-nal between the entrants who came up to the scratch. Athletic events will take place to-day.
