AMERICAN OFFICER SHOT
JAPAN TO PAY AN INDEMNITY;
Washington, January 14.
A Note from the State Department has been sent to the Japanese Government, stating that the killing of Lieutenant Langdon, an officer on the American cruiser Albany, by a Japanese sentry at Vladivostok (reported a few days ago) is serious and regrettable, and requests Japan to take adequate steps to rectify the wrong.—Aus.-N.Z. A Manila telegram states that it is understood that Japan has already agreed to pay an indemnity for the killing of Lieutenant Langdon. Admiral Cleaves, who had been ordered to proceed to Vladivostok to inquire into the incident, returned to Manila shortly after starting, it being understood that he had received a wireless message indicating that the affair had been adjusted.— Aus.-N.Z.
