THE NEW VOLUNTEER ARMY
SCHEME FOR ELECTION OF COUNCIL
BY SOLDIERS By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. London, January 12. The "Daily Chronicle's” special correspondent in Berlin says the new volunteer army, of 100,000 men, will consist of twenty-one infantry and eighteen cavalry regiments, and seven independent squadrons, with artillery. It is estimated that it will cost 5000 million marks a year. Privates will enlist for twelve years, and officers for twenty-five The men will be educated in civil occupations during their service. There will probably be fierce opposition in the Reichstag to the proposal to create an Army Council, appointed by soldiers’ votes, to act in an advisory capacity to the Minister. Supporters of Prussian methods regard the scheme as tho beginning of Soviet rule—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
