WORLD’S MARKETS

GERMANY’S EFFORT TO REGAIN PRE-WAR HOLD SCHEME TO CAPTURE OVERSEAS TRADE By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. London, January n. The present year will witness the most determined effort on the part of Germany to regain her pre-war hold on th, world’s markets. Already a Hood of imports to England from the Fatherland, including huge stocks of toys, machinery, and textiles, has seriously affected th“ economic situation, and has greatly added to the unemployment and the closing ot factories. Now the Leipzig Lair, which hitherto has been substantially fostered and subsidised by the German Government, is preparing for a gigantic worldwide trade sweep, directed particularly against tho reviving overseas trade ot the late enemies of Germany. It has applied to the Government for twenty million marks, to be spent on trade propaganda abroad. This is in contrast to 1919, when it asked for and was granted only one million marks. The directors ol the fair recognise that to be completely successful the scheme will involve another twenty millions. This they are endeavouring to raise from private firms. The'rehabilitation of Germany’s shipping is slowly but surely proceeding, and will necessarily largely affect this situation. Tho Hamburg-Amerika Company, at an extraordinary meeting, decided to raise its capital by a sum up to a hundred million marks. The cnairman inferred to the danger of interests becoming predominant, and he stated that Hamburg was rapidly becoming a prosperous port.—" The Times.
