CHESS TOURNAMENT
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP,

-u Dunedin, December 28. The thirtieth annual chess tournament for the championship of New Zealand commenced at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The following games were completed :— Mason v. Fouhy (Centre Counter Gam-bit).-On the tenth move Mason announced mate in two.
dyles v. Kelling (Centre Counter Gambit).—At move 23 Kelling gave up a rook for a bishop and pawn. Gyles retaliated by giving up a bishop and so ■wo* Kelling's queen for a ronlc. After this it -was easy going for Gyles, and Kolling resigned at the thirty-third move. Dunlop v. Sevorne (Queen's Gambit Declined).—At the nineteenth move Dunlop lost a pieco by an error. By a brilliant piece of play ho later succeeded in mating Severne on the thirty-fourth move. This game may take the prize for the best save.
Davies v. Coombs (Fhilidor Defence).— A very even game until about the twentyeighth move. Then Davies played well and Coombs resigned on ttic thirty-fourth move. ■
At the opening ceremony congratulatory telegrams were read from the Wellington Working Men's "Chess Club. Mr. Grierson, of Auckland, the Wellington Chess Club, and the Cliristchurch Chess Club.
