CANTERBURY GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET

By Telegrapn—Press Association 1 . Christchurch, December 21. Until after 'the holidays there will ibe practically no business done in the grain and produce market, nnd there is little prospect of any impetus being given to the trade until next season's crops .become marketable. Poulterers liave absorbed the supplies of fowl wheat, and as there is none available at present t'he.v have to be content ivitli mixture.? of oats, barley, and peas, or any other substitutes obtainable. A few more sales of oats hnvo been made at 3s. 3(1,, f.0.b,, S.I.J foV B grade and at 3r. Gd. for A grade Gartons, but the sales were so small that the above quotations cannot b.' accepted ns a criterion of values. There is much speculation ns to 'the prospect for oats next year, nnd the present indications are that the price to farmers will be only about 2s. 3d. or 2s. 4d., on trucks at country stations. Owing to the dry spring, the Canterbury oat crops are not likely to be as heavy as tho.v were last year, and between Christclmrch and Ashbnrton many of the fields now ripening appear to be light. There is very little business doing in grasses and linseeds, and what inquiries do come from the North Island appear to be only "nibbles," in anticipation of i7i6 coming harvest.
