GOVERNOR-GENERAL AS A YACHTSMAN.
FIRST APPEARANCE IN NEW ZEALAND WATERS.
More than usuul interest was taken m the North Shore Yacht Club's race tor the lift, one-design class on Saturday owing to the fact that the GovornorGeneral, Ijord Jellicoe, was to be seen at tho helm of his new boai", the Iron Duke (says the Auckland "Herald ). As His Excellency was sailing his first race in Auckland-in the Dominion in faci— a very large number of yachting enthusiasts niul the general public gathered on tho King's Wharf to witness the race, while a number of yachts and launches followed the boats rouiid tlie course. ■ The race was sailed in the harbour ana brought out ten starters, nil of winch (iiished except: one. The wind was very lig-ht when the race staged, and in keepin" rather 100 lar away from the siartinff line, wliicli was off the end of King s Wharf."* the Iron. Duke was unable to reach the line in time, with tho result that she got a bad start being the last boat but one to cross. Shortly after the start a nice northerly breeze sprang up and the Iron Duke at once began to overhaul her opponents. One by one sue headed them, and when the first. mnrk-Heso-lntion buoy—was reached, she had sailed into fifth position. The beat across to the Saiulsnit beacon enabled her to close up 011 the leaders, Ola, Idler, Jldna, and Kevttie, but she was unable .to head them. After rounding the beacon, howover, the Iron Duke replaced both Kdna and ICowpie, but before the first round was completed she was again overtaken by Ivewpic. In the second round Iron Duke maintained her position, finishing fourth, after a most exciting race. Willi performance of the Irdn Duke is « very creditable one, especially as the typo of boat ia new to Ills LxceUency and also Uiat he is not yet accustomed to tho harbour currents. Among the boats that wore beaten by the Iron Duke was the Meteor, winner of tho race for_one-desi-mers. held recently by tho Kojal New Zealand Yacht. Squadron.
