OBITUARY

THE HON G. JONES, M.L.C.

By Telegraph—Press Asiociation. Oamaru, December 16. The death occurred this evening of the Hon. George Jones, M.L.C. Deceased was born in Upper Hutt in 18U. He entered Parliament ns representative of 1 WahUki in 1880. and sat for two sessions. On tho rearrangement «f boundaries, Mr. Jones did not seek re-election. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1895, and sat almost continuously as member of that Chamber. He was a staunch advocate of the leasehold tenure and tho breaking lup of large estales in this district was largely due to bis persistent efforts. For fifty years he was prominently associated with Now- Zealand journalism. He was well known as a finished violinist, and for many years was conductor of the Oamaru Garrison Band.
