TRAM ENGINE AND DRAY COLLIDE
♦ : DRIVER SERIOUSLY .INJURED. ' Br Tclegraph-H'cM amociiuiou. Auckland, November .11. A sensational accident occurred this afternoon on the main road at Takapiina, when tlie tramway engine collided with a dray drawn bv two horses ami drivnn by D. M'Lenn. The . dray was coming up from the Takapuna 'beach empty, and tho impact occurred at u dangerous crossing.. The driver of the dray evidently did not heaivjhc whisllo ol (iiu approaching engine, .and . his leader had' crossed the tram line before iU'Leau knew of his danger. He endeavoured to get across ahead of (lie tram, but the engine crashed into tho rear part of the dray, Which was lifted bodily over to li« middle of the load. -M Lean was jerked into the air and then fell on to the roaijwiiv apparently striking the metal with Jus head, for blood' was found inside the straw hot he was wearing. He was unconscious when picked up. The horses in the dray hnd a mnrvoHous escape from being killed or seriously injured. The harness was broken and both horses got clear without u scratch. The dray was' not much' damaged, the only injury to it being the breaking of one of tho lyres. There were very fciv passeugem on the (rani and nobody was injured, beyond being slightly shaken. The lifeguard of tho engine was badly smashed, but otherwise the engine and tram were undamaged.
