ENGLISH MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
LABOUR HEAVILY DEFEATED.
London, November 2. .The outstanding feature of the municipal elections in three hundred English boroughs, in which one-third of the membership is annually elected, was the heavy defeat, of the Labourites, particularly in the industrial districts. The most .prominent issue was the soaring rates, which are highest where Labour majorities control affaire.
An analysis of the returns shows that of 747 Labour candidates who contested seats in seventy boroughs, 19!) were nturned. Their worst defeats were in Liverpool anil Bradford, whore the entire tickets, of 23 each, failed to win a singlo seat. Similar complete failures aro reported in sixteen other boroughs, while only two-Norwich and Dotherham -have bo far returned all the Labour candidLates. The Liberals and Conservatives show no marked change, but Independents advocating, the reduction of rates met "witn considerable succe6s. — Reuter.
