HOW IMPORTANT PIVOTAL STATES •

"BrT«l«Brapli"Presß Aiioclatlon-OopyrlirM New York, October 27. The "Herald". prints dispatches from the capitals of nine important pivotal States concerning the probable outcome of the elections. The "Herald" is a Republican newspaper, but emphasises the fact that it asked its correspondents to be absolutely non-partisan. Indiana is unquestionably for Harding. The Republicans will elect the State 1 Governor and at least eleven of the thirteen members of the' 1 House of Representatives. The contest for the Senate is extremely doubtful. ■ California will vote for. Harding and a Republican Senator. Maryland will vote for Harding, and, probably, ' a Republican Senator. Idhno is doubtful concerning the President, and tho Senator probably will be Democratic. In Wisconsin the Senatorial light has .been miide complex by the fact fihat two Republicans and one Democrat are running. The Democratic nominee is not expected to win, Ono Republican is theregular party ■ nominee, the other is Independent. The vote is uncertain. _ Utah will be for Cox and a Democratic Senator. New York will be for Harding by half a million votes, apd a Republican Senator. Missouri probably will be for Harding and a Republican Senator. EFFORTS TO CAPTURE CALIFORNIA AND OHIO

New York, October 27. Special interest is shown in the campaign in California and Ohio. It will be recalled that California decided the 1010 election' for President Wilson, but owing to the lack of a protective tariff curing President-Wilson's administration California has suffered from tho(importation of foreign fruits. It is now conceded that Senator Harding will win California. He lias promised a strong protective tariff. Californians feel .thai President Wilson is waiting to soe whether Sonator Harding is elected before taking up the Japanese questioji seriously with Tokio Ohio is now the battleground of both parties. Most strenuous efforts, are being made to swing the State to the respective candidates. The fight is exceedingly bitter, and the partisans of both camps are not over scrupulous concerning the means emploved A large lumber of negroes have flocked to Ohio. During the war they were working in munition 1 lie Republicans are strenuously organising these.
