L__J — DRUNKENNESS AND SLY GROG- - SELLING.
"There lias been an increase of 98S in the number of prosecutions for drunkenness during the year as compared with tin previous year," states the Commissioner of Police in his annual i spurt. "The number charged with drunkenness in 1919 was 821G (7758 males and 458 females), whereas in 1918 the number was 722S (6733 males and 495 females V Of the total number of persons charged with, drunkenness during the year 1919, 3iS2 per cent, of the males and GO.OI per cent, of the females had previous convictions recorded against them, and 10.1 per cent, of the males were not permanent residents of the Dominion. _ "There were 50 prosecutions during ttie year for selling liquor without a llcenso, resulting in 41 convictions, and there we'e also 64 prosecutions, resulting in 45 convictions, for'other offences againat the provisions of the Licensing Act in iorce in no-license districts. The finss i npniod on «jlv grog-sellers during the 1?19 amounted to .£IB2O, ns against JiISM in 1918. The direct, cost to the Department in detecting and prosecuting sly «ojsellers during Hie year was ,C 490. • this being £1325 less than the amount of lines imposed."
