PRICE OF BUTTER

• 4 TO BE INCREASED'!!* DUNEDIN.-/ By Teleerapli—Press Association. Dunedin, October 1. The price of the new ejmson'd make of butter will be increased to about 2s. lOil. per lb. as from ' to-morrow.; It is explained by the factory authorities that the price paid for butter-fat sinc>> August 1 has. been 2s. 6d. per lb., and one ofths leading butter factories has now decided to charge 2s. 71d. pea' pound for this season's make, wVich means that, tlie retail price will'be about 2s. lOd. The factory referred to had to sell a portion of . its output to-day at a loss of Is. per lb. It is understood hero that there is plenty of butter in the Dominion to-day, and that it is likely to come on the market freely noiv that there is a free market. Tho position regarding butter is that under tlie present regulations none of tho butter made last season can be sold retail for more than Is. 9d. per lb. The butter now in the stores is all last season's butter. New butter, which is now buiiiff made in comparatively email quantities, is not subject to the restriction, but there is good ground for believing that the official prico for this butter will not exceed 2s. fid. per pound over thp counter.
