INQUEST ON ALFRED MAILE.

Mr. J. S. Evans. S.M.. opened an inquest yesterday into the circumstances attending the death of Alfred Talbot Maile, fruiterer, Upland Poad. kelburn. 'who was knocked down bv a taxi-cob at the corner of Courtonay Place and lorv Street on Wednesday morning, and died in the Public Hospital about two hours after the accident. Mailo was 49 years of age, and married. Senior-Detective Boddam, of the Taranaki Street, Police Station, appeared cn beValf of tho police; Sir Kenneth Donelas watched the proceedings on behalf of tho widow and the adopted child of tho deceased; Mr. H F. O'Leary was present on behalf of tho Motor Union Insurance Co., who hold tho policy of insurance over the taxi-cab; and Air. A. W Blair appeared for William Arthur Webb, driver of the taxi-cab. . Dr. Parker, of tho Wellington Hospital in his evidence, stated that Mnilo was admitted to the Hospital soon after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, and he found that Ins Tight leg was broken, also both ankles. Deceased had soreral ribs on tho right side broken, and his skull was fractured at the base. Deceased died at l.iO p!m. from shock as the result 01 tlift iniuries received . .. ■ The Coroner said that he thought it would hu advisable for him to (to out and view the eceno of tho accident. Atter somo discussion on this point it wnf decided to take formal evidence, and then ndjonrn the inquest. Henry Uarnard, fruiterer, 198 Lnmbton Quav, said ho had known Mailo for a number of years, and ho was an mtimate friend of his. Ho was with Maile about 11 a.m. on Wednesday when a motor-car collided with them in Courtenay Place. Tlio motor-car was driven bv a. stage the inquest was adjourn-• ed' to a date to bo tod. •
