THEFT PKOM A SHIP'S HOLD.
In tho Magistrate's Court on Saturday morning, before Mr. P. K. Hunt. S.M., n young follow named James Logio, for whom Sir. W. Perry appeared, pleaded guilty to tho theft of six dozen dessert spoons, the property of Bannatyne and Co., Ltd. . Sub-Inspector Emerson said that Logio had ton noticed by a constable endeavouring to hide himself behind another man as ho was leaving work on thy Port Sydney on Friday evening, and on account of his suspicious behaviour the constable followed him nnd asked him to give an account of. himself. Logic had ti number of spoons in his coat pocket, nnd more wcn> found in his belt and down tho legs of Ms trousers. It appeared that tho caTC O M be° n tampered with while tho vessel was in Auckland, ns claims for £iS had be,m made against iiio shipowner at that port. The explanation given by tho accused was that Tv,-» found the spoons in tho hold in which ho was working. II r. Perry urged the youth of the accused as a ground for knient treatment; lie also stated that T.ogie, who is 18 TC-nr? of ago, hind no record against him, and that ho had yielded to- a sudden temptation. Logio and his mother arrived from Scotland recently, and defendant had been at work on tho wharf for not more than three weeks. ■ Ho urged the Magistrate to take the facts ho had statwl into consideration and deal leniently with the youth. The Magistrate said it was a serious offence. "Ho comes into tho country and starts to steal right away. He deserves three months," remarked His Worship, The caws was adjourned until Tuesday, in order that further inquiries might be made. An application for bail was recused.
