LIFT FOR THE TERRACE
CITY ENGINEER TO REPORT.
Tho Tramwavs and Electric Lighting Committee of the City Council reported at last evening's meeting of the council that it had been waited upon by a dc. putation from the Wellington Terrace' district, who urged that the council should take steps to provide an electric lift or tramway to provide for the needs of the district. The conimitteo pointed out that the council had this matter under consideration some years ago, when the City Engineer prepared plans and specifications for an inclined lift irora Boulcott Street to The Terrace, over the Church Sitreet steps. On the tramway estimates for the year 1916-17 a sum of MM was placed as a first instalment towards tho cost of the work; and on the estimates for 1917-1S this amount was increased to MOOO. Owing, however, to the conditions brought about by tho war. the work was held la abeyance, especially in view of tho proposed new tramway to supply the needs of the Northland and Karori district As the council had in this latter case decided on a route remote from the Terrace, tlie committee recommended that tho City Engineer be instructed to prepare plans, specifications, and estimates of the cost for the purposo of constructing either an electric lift or an inclined tramway to serve tho Wellington Terrace district.
Councillor Luckio said that the proposal was considered to negative a propose previously presented to' the council. The Mayor explained that the engineer would have power of discrimination. All tho engineer was asked to do was to report on the matter to the council. The matter would still be entirely open for discussion by the council.
