Tho Auckland City Council last night Appointed Mr. J. if. Walklate Acting Town Clerk, and Mr. .1. G. Warren Assistant Town Clerk—Press Assn.

An, old identity of Timaru, Major Augustus Win. Wright, passed away on Wednesday morning. He arrived at Lyttelton in 1871, and became a cadet on Mi'. E. G. Russell's Otipua estate, near Timaru. Later ho managed tho Sherwood and Hakataramea estates, subsequently farming at Claiemont and Winchester. He retired sixteen years ago, and had lived since in Timaru. He was an enthusiastic volunteer, and for many years commanded tho C.Y.C., retiring as major. Ho was an early member of the South Canterbuiy A. and P. Association (being president for one year), a member of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club and tho South Canterbury Hunt Club, also a life-member, of ,the Acclimatisation Society. He leaves two sons and four daughters.—Press Assn.

Lieut.-G'olonel If. E. Avery, C.M.G., D.5.0., New Zealand Sinn" Corps, who has been appointed New Zealand military representative in London, will loavo for Sydney, en routo to England, by the Moeraki.

Brpckett, of Christchurcli, to be collector, Wcstporl, K. 11. Smyth, of Wellington, to be first clerk, Dunedin.

A well-known Auckland resident, Mr. C G. Both-ill, died at Pousonby on Tuesday after a short illness . Mr. Bottrill was 61 years of age. In his youngci davs Mr. Bottrill was well known in athletic- circles, being a prominent cyclist, oarsman, and cricketer. In more recent years he was a keen bowling enthusiast.

Mr. Hibernin- Smythe, of Waitcmata, Auckland, died yesterday at the age ol 83. Deceased, who was one of the earliest settlers of tho district, leaves a widow.

Messrs. A. C. Kitto and C L. Turnbull were last night elected life-members of tho Wellington Amateur Athletic Club.

"Amateur athletics and sport genei-j ally have lost one of their best friends, remarked the president Mr. A. A. Marryntt at last night's annual meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association, in alluding to the death of Councillor George Frost. Tho late Mr. l'rost, added Mr. Marryatt, was a true sport. Tho president's eulogy was endorsed by other members, and it was decided to forward a letter of condolence to Ins widow.

At last night's meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club a presentation was made to Mr. C. L. 'J.iirnbull. who has relinquished the position or honorary secretary to that, body on account of his removal to Palmorston North. The president (Mr. A. A. Marryatt) spoke in glowing terras of the services of Mr. Turnbull, who, as secretary, had championed the eauso of ath.etics for the past seven years. On behalf ot members he. then handed Mr. 'lurnbnll a leather suit-case.

Rifleman D. J. Guiney, of tho Petone Rifle Club, who is among the team chosen to represent New Zealand in Australia, commenced his shooting career when in Christchurcli Boys' High School Cadets, and showed considerable proiyiso 'as a marksman. Later he shot particularly well with the Christchurcli Defence Riflo Club. Following upon the signing of the armistice, Rifleman Guiney, who was on active service., was selected to compete at Bisley with tho New Zealand team During his association with tho Petone Club he won the championship at the Wai'rarapa meeting, took fourth place at the Dominion meeting, and secured honours at three minor meetings.

It is notified in. the Gazette v that Mr. B. B. Swinburn has been appointed Inspector of Noxious Weeds for tho Raehln Town District.

Eecent promotions in the Lauds Department include:—Messrs. C. E. Archibald, of North Auckland, to be Chief Clerk and 'Receiver, Dunedin; W. S. Hardy, of Wellington, Chief Clerk and Receiver, Nelson; D. Smith, of Inverear<nll, Chief Clerk and Receiver, North Auckland; J. Maedonald, of Dunedin, Chief Clerk and Receiver, Invercargill.

The npnointment of the following new inspectors of schools is announced :— Messrs. A. Bain, T. J.' Griffin C. R, Munroe, R. B. Ryder, G. Schneider, and W. A. Service.

<M*r F N. Thompson, Assistant-Engin-eer in the Public Works Department, Wellington, lias been appointed Resident Engineer, Napier. Mr. William Dunningham, formerly manager of the Hawkes Bay Club Napier, and latterly oi the Northern Club, Auckland, has been .appointed manager of Bellamy's.
