THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glkncoe. On Friday next entries for the Napier Hasting, Whangarei, and Masterton meet/ ings will close, as will acceptances for the Otaki, Wanganui, and Avondalc fixtures. The lioschill Meeting is set down for decision on Saturday next. Vespucci U engaged in the Guineas, and will probably be a runner. He also figures in the A..1.U. Derby on October 2, and as the. field does not include anything of outstanding merit his prospects of crediting Mr G. D. Greenwood with yet another blue ribbon looks bright. . Tnc Durie Hack Handicap at Wanganui next week will be for apprentice riders. Formerly the youngsters had their outing on the two-year-olds on the scconu day, but this was not a wise policy, and has been discontinued.
A. Shearsby., who lias been in business for some years, lias decided to again takeout a trainer's license, aud will oncemoru be located at Awapuni.
Reunion, who put up an Australasian record for seven furlongs, of lmin. 24Jai!c., at ltamlwic.lt, on Saturday, is engaged in the A.J.O. Epsom Handicap at the hnnfly weight of 7st. 71b. Thi-s effort is suro to bring him into favour for the big mile event.
A cable message from London mentions that Mr. Sandford, vice-president •of the Australian Jockey Club, recently |taM 16,000 guineas for a colt by Sunstar. This is probably a record price, as only a few days ago it was cabled that Lord Glauelv had paid tlio record sum of 14,500 guineas for a colt by Tlio Totrarch from Muetit.
At the annual meeting of tlio Napier I'ark Racing Club there was a keen contest for the position of president, and as a result Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P., who has filled the office for a great many years, was defeated by Mr. M. H. Stracli.il). Mr. Brown was re-elected to the position of treasurer to the club.
Wishful, who used to carry Mr. 'J. )/• Stead's colours, and later those of Sir. W. R. Kcmball, who tried* him over hurdles with but poor: results, ia now doing duty as a. lady's hack at Masterton, and his racing days arts over.
Warmth, who has been hunting in the Hamilton district during the season, has been reLurned to her owner, Captain Gago Wtiliauis, at Cartertou. She will probably be nominated for the Jumpers' Flat, races at Masterton and Taratahi.
The erection of the electric totalisator on the Feilding course is being: pushed on with vigour, and it will he in use for tlio spring meeting in November. The imported horso Chrysolaus was r'>sponslble for a high-class performance m winning the Chelmsford Stakes at Sydney Tatlcsall's Mcoling on Saturday. t'Ue was burdened with the maximum penalty, and the field would probably include most of the prominent Derby candidates, as well as the best of the old horses in Sydney. Chrysolaus had been twice beaten iit handicaps this season, but his failures did not cause him to shorten in price for the Epsom Handicap, for which he may. start a very hot order, despite the fact that lie has to carry 9st. 61b. Last Easter he was thought unlucky when Sydney Damsel beat him in the Doncastcr Handicap, and 'a few days later he performed brilliantly in the All-Ageil Stakes, easily beating a strong field in lmin. 37Ssec.. and a. Itandwick record for a mile. AMBERLEY ACCEPTANCES, Br Teleen;nli—Press Assoein.;i:n. Christchiifoii, September 14.'
