BROKEN HILL STRIKERS
A concert was givn in the Town Hall last night in aid of die strike fundl of Hie Broken Hill miners. Mr. -T. B. Williams, president of the Barrier Tic'lief AsBociation, explained the object, of the concert in a brief address, and stated the causes of the rt.rike from the "'"'it'" view of the miner". He said that the ■miners were claiming a- six-hour shift, hank to bank, a five-day week, abolition ot night work, abolition of a contract systom. a wairc of S\ w>r shift, and compensation on the basis of full wares for time lost as a. rcFiilt of accident or occupational dis°ases. The mining companies, he contended, were paying dividends to the amount of £1,500.000 a year, and were well able to make the concessio/i. which were necessary on account of the unhealthy nature of the work in the mines. The struggle had continued for more than c vear, and the working population of Broken Hill had suffered severely. But the men were determined to win. and were nnnealinc for assistance to enable them to hold out. The musical nroeramrae included niano solos by Mr. Prank CrowIher. songs bv Miss Ella, Scmple and Messrs. J. Sehofield. Martin Duff, L. Nelson, and M'Kenzie. and duets by the Smithsonianß. Mr. Crowther was the accompanist.
