NORTH V. SOUTH ISLAND
DEFEAT OF SOUTHERN TEAM
_A hockey match between representatives of the North and South Islands was played at the Basin lleserre on Saturday afternoon in the presence of several hundred spectators, and the northern team was victorious by 3 goals to 1, all of tho points being registered in ilhe first spell. The-ground was somewhat heavy, but nevertheless an attractive d'splay was provided.
The teams were:—North Island: Goalkeeper, li. Cooper (Auckland); right full back, It. Knglatid (Auckland); left full back, 0. K. Porrlln (Manawatu); light'half, C. Martin (Wellington); centre half, C. V. Johns '( Auckland); left half. H. McGregor (Wellington); outs3i!o right, AV. T!. Jacobsen (Hawke's Bay); inside right, Blundell (Wanganui); centre forward, V. Tucker (Manawatu); inside left, L. 0. Boyd (Well'iigtoii); outside left, S. Land (Hawke's Bay). South Island: Goalkeeper, H. Sncoks (Canterbury) ; right; full Kick, C. Harris (Nelson); left full back, P. Berry (Canterbury); rfeht half, W. Byburn (Otago); centre half, B. Morris (Canterbury); left half. J. Pascoe (Canterbury); outside right, H. It. Turhutt (Otago); inside r'ghf, W. .Amos (Nelson); centre forward, H. Bell (CnmWburv): inside left. W. Bell (Canterbury); oufside left, H. Throp (Canterbury). South Island attacked after the bullyoff and North Island conceded a penalty corner, but the northerners managed to save tiheir goal and carried play to the south end. Here a deiemr'ned tussle took place. North Island were aeain placed on the defensive, and an excellent save was effected by Cooper. The' visitors were forced back towards their own line, and a score looked likely, but Boyd shot the bull over the goal. The bully-off resulted in South Island's favour and a strong attack was turned aside in good style by England. The North iignin took charge, and Blundell scored with a good shot. North Island. 1; South Island, 0. Up and down play followed until, from a throw-in. the South Island go'.l close to the Northern eoal and Bell had a shot, which went a trifle w'de. Tho North Island forwards again took charge and were awarded a penalty corner, which resulted in Tucker finding the net. North Island, 2; South Island, 0. Two minutes after (life, the Somili Island forwards were knocking at the North door again, and the ball came to Amos, who Rinsed it into the net. North Island, 2; South Island, 1. There wns a nico bi'i of play when the Canterbury forwards set up a hot attack on the North goal, and in this movement Throp took a prominent part. The defence proved sound, and South Tsland were compelled to ro'lire. North Island, maintained tho pressure, and Tucker goaled. North Island. 3; South Island, 1. Half-time then sounded.
South Island secured the advantage after resumption, bit North turned the tables and carriW '.'he nlay towards the southern goal. The goal mouth was onen, and there was no opposition, hut Blumioll lifted the ball high into the air and over the net. North_ were ■unlucky on a couple of occasions in the ensuing play, Tucker and Blundell nr'ssing. tlioi goal in succession. The play now became very willing and 'ihere "-as a temporary stoppage owing to. McGregor receiving n severe knock with'the bill on the bridge of his nose. A few minutes later Amos lind to retire with n broken finger on his left hand, received wlr'le South Island were defending their goal from a sharp attack. N. Boyd replaced M'Gregor and R. Sheriffs vent' on in place of Amos. North had the best of the following nlay. b"t there was no further score. Messrs. Balllugo- (Canterbury) and A. W. Manning (Wellington) were referees.
' COUNTRY V. TOWN. A "curtain-raiser" to the big match was provided bv ladies' teams represenvi.ng Country arid Town. .Hutt Valley and St. Augustine's players constituted the Country team, and Centics and Mirauiar tho Town combination. After an interesting game, Town won by 1 goal to nil, the scorer being Miss Brunette. OTAKI AND HUIA DRAW. On Saturday a team representing tho local Huia Club iourneyed lo,.otaki to play a match with il'.ic Otaki team. Tho result wns a draw, each team netting three goals. The result fairly ■'jidicat'os tho merit* of the tennis. Within ten minut'iss of time Otaki were one goal in the lead, ami Huia made strenuous efforts to equalise. Excitement ran high and play became very willing. Tho Wellington men succeeded in drawing level, however, ind at the call of time were agafti attacking; strongly in tho Otaki area. The play throughout, though hardly scientific, owing to tho humpy nature of the ground, was. very keen and interest never flagged. Giddns (2) and Cook shot the goals for Otaki and Butcher (2) and Adams contributed Hiiin's 'iilly. Messrs. Nicholson and To Hiwi gave satisfaction as referees. ' In the evening the visiting (cam were entertained at a smoke concert in . <f: Druids' Kail. Mr. Nicholson presided,, and musical and elocutionary items were contributed-bv vieiWng and local talent.
