AN "ELGAR" NIGHT

WITH THE HARMONIC SOCIFyiT. Sir Edward Elgar, possibly the foremost English composer of the day, has written a really wonderful collection of music of a class that will find increasing admiration and respect as time rolls on. Nothing is trivial or transient about Elgar's work. Ho has an intellectual depth and majesty of conception which make an appeal only to the higher emotions, and, naturally, the more one hears of his music the deeper sinks the impression that in this composer England has a writer of supreme talent, if not genius. It was therefore with pleasure that one listened to this repeat Elgar concert given 'by the Wellington Harmonic Society at the Town Hall. li. was a matter for regret, that the audience present was not. larger. The society deserves all praise for its pluck and enterprise in arranging, such a pro"•rammc. The part songs included tho Homeric "Challenge of Thor" (from "King Otaf"), "0, Happy Eyes, Go. Song of Mine" "Spanish Serenade, "The Snow," "My Love Dwelt in a Norton Land." "Weary Wind of the West," and "It Came Through the Misty Ages" (from "The Banner of St. George"). Considering the limitation of the mixed choir, the singing 'was excellent, throughout, and the diction and modulation a credit to the e™*"*™"* training of Mr. H Temple White tk> society's indefatigable conductor. Mention should be made of the nohr,.and piano accompaniment to Hie hnow for ladies' voices only by Misses Lamie Anderson and Dorothy Mills aml Mr. Harold Whittle; Coming to the soloists Miss Mnbelle Esnmlant sang Wff*™ b antiful son,s.
