After a brief period of u-< and down play, lliev cot the hall down elose to the visitors' coal-mouth, and Porter esviyed to head the leather through the goal, but it passed over the bar. A minute or bo afterwards the home side again came elose to scoring, hut the ball came in contact with the posts. The next piece of "lay of note was a OTCcta'ciilar individual effort by Tantrum, the Wang.inui outside left, who carried the ball up field in cood ptvle, beating several opponents in clever fashion. The plav then became very dull and uninteresting." hut at last Wellington drew blood. The forwards carried the ball down field, and Ballard put it into the net with a beautiful shot. After resumption Porter changed the venue from the Wellington end to the visitors' penalty area, ami the way seemI'd clear for him to score, when Hcnly tackled, him and saved the situation. The respite for Wangauui was only temporary, for within two minutes Wellington attacked, and Bold coaled with a long shot. Wellington, 2; Wanganul. 0. Both sides now indulged in much wild and indecisive kicking and in the gamo larked a good deal. Twice In succession Wellington had bad luck, as two likely-looking chances were lost through faulty head work. Porter had an easy shot at close .quarters in the sulr.e.ouent play, but his direction was bad. Wanijamii then got going in a- sharp attack and came quite close to scoring, but Tarrant effected a good Bave. The visitors again invaded Wellington territory, and almost Bcored, but the movement was spoiled in it 1 ", final stages by a little over-eagerness. Towards Hie end of the game Wancanui got possession but Wellington gained the unpff rfaud and Porter had little difficulty in piloting the ball through an open goal. Wellington. 3; Wauganui. 0. The most excitim? play in the game now occurred when the visitors pressed hard for an advantage, and Wellington were called upon to defend their goal with energy.
