GOALS ,TO 2
By defeating Auckland by i goals io 2 at the Basin Heservo on Saturday afternoon, Wellington again sustained their title to the Brown Shield. The match was fairly interesting, and was watched by between 2000 and 3000 people. Amoiiu tlio spectators were the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G.)., and -Mr. A. Harris, AI.P. Wellington were lucky to win, lor at times their play was not up to tinstandard of the visitors, who were v.-iy nippy, and combined well. Tackling was one quality particularly in which Wellington were deficient, and this nearly accounted for scores being recorded against, them on more than one occasion. The ground was heavy, and thin factor militated against good play to a certain extent.
Following were the teams:— Wellington (Black).—Goalkeeper, .T. Portcous; full-backs, J. M'lCenjue (right), 14, Taylor (left); half-backs, N. M'Arthur (right), 11. Bradbury (centre), 11. Batten licit); forwards, H. Porter (outside right), J. Smith (inside right). D. Ferguson (centre), G. Campbell (insido left). O. Ballard (outside left Auckland (Blue and White).—Goal-M-eper, A. ~Wolstcnholme; full-backs, L, "Dacre (right); W. AVallwork (left); Imlf-backs, J. Haycock (right), P. Baker (centre), P. Colvin (left); forwards, -\t. Harnett (outside right), A. E. Tremain (inside right), 11. 13. Pealing (centre), C. C. Dacre (insido loft). A. Woollev (outsiile left).
Auckland kickod off against tho sun i and wind, and Wellington attacked] strongly. Before the game had been m progress two minutes AYollingtan drew blood per medium of Ferguson, whose pliot was an exceedingly good one. Aftei this, Auckland got going in a fiiu rush, and a score was averted by M'lCenzie, who bent Woolley nicely. Campbell and Ballard (lid some fine work for Wellington m carrying the bail up field in good stylo between them, and some hard plan followed in front of the Auckland goal. The pressure was strong, and n. stinging shot sent in at close quarters by a Wellington forward was fended oif by noltitoithoiwc, tvliosc <?lfort was loudly upplauded. . The Aticklanders once more Invaded the Wellington territory, but the Blacks soon retaliated, and changed the venue to in front of the Auckland goal. Smith sent in a shot which the goalkeeper tried to prevent going tlirougn the goalmouth, but, instead, ho only succetled in knocking tho ball into the net. 'Wellington, 2; Auckland, 0. Up-and-down plav followed until the Auckland forwards attacked hard, and Pealing found tho net. Wellington, 2; Auckland. 1. Within two minutes ntter this Auckland again invaded the Wellington penalty urea. Ihe ball struck the post, and Porteous tell forward in an endeavour to catch tho leather in his hand. Harnett took advantage of the opportunity, and goaled before Porteous could get up off Uie ground. Wellington, 2; Auckland, 2. Wellington nearly scored in the subsequent play, but a shot by Porter missed the net. The Blacks wtve not to be denied, however, and, taking a long pass ironi Smith, Ballard drove the ball into tli& net. Wellington, 3; Auckland, J. Close work took place in midfield, until Campbell broke clear with the ball iU his toe. He carried the leather up field, and was smnrtly tackled by Wallwork, who however, was temporarily incapacitated in the attempt. Half-time then sounded. After resumption, Wellington attacked, but the Auckland defence was sound Determined play took place in front of the Blue goal, and Bradbury tried to score, but tho ball went over the bar. There was a brief period of play on the line, and on the game becoming more open, both eides indulged in some rather wild kicking. If anything, Auckland were displaying, more combination than Wellington, and good work was perform-, ed by L. M. Dacre, who turned _a Wei-! luigton attack into a retreat. Ultimately, however, the Wellington forwards took charge, and Campbell had a shot which went wide. Good play by Porter enabled Wellington to invade tho Aucklond territory again, but the play became somewhat dull. Auckland drove the. Blacks back, but suddenly Porter and Ferguson eame away in a nice rush, carrying the fihfl down'field between them. Auckland conceded a corner, and a shot was? made by Campbell, but the ball went just outside the goal. The Wellington tacklimr was not veiy brilliant, and tins enaliied Auckland to shift the danger zone. A couple of good saves wero made in quick succession by Wolstenliolme in the ensuing play, nnd then two good chances were lost by Campbell, whose direction proved bad. Both sides now began to swing the ball about a little more freely, but the finishing touches were in no way clean. The Auckland defenco was tried severely on several occasions, but V> alltvorlc and L. M. Daere were very sure. Towards the end of the spell Ferguson sent in a shot, and the Auckland gmilkeepr/. 1 ol>cared, but Campbell put the final touch with an excellent goal. Wellington, 4; Auckland, 2. The game then ended. Mr. 11, Dawson, of New Plymouth, was referee.
