LEAGUE FOOTBALL

CANTERBURY DEFEAT WELLING- , TON. By Telegraph-Prces Association. Christchurch, August 28. Tho representative League fixture Wellington v. Canterbury was played today in prrfcct weather. The game was fast and interesting, and not so onesided as the score would indicate. Canterbury were the more aggressive team throughout, and hardly let nil opportunity pass, whereas Wellington had not the finish to round off their attacking movements. The final scores were: Canterbury, 43; Wellington, 10. Tlie match was preceded by a junior fixture, Central (Wellington) v. Avon, the home team winning by 23 to 10.

Wellington wore unfortunate in not being able to got their host plnvers away, the team which went being fur from representative. Of those selected, Bradley, Pollock, and Eraser, three of the 'best backs, were unable to make the trip, and if. was the weakness in this department tiiat contributed largely to the defeat of the team. The forwards went very well and more than hold their own. Dnllej', Duske, and Dnwe were prominent in some fine loose, rushes, but-had no luck when it came to scoring. Nicholls and Stroak were the pick of the backs, the latter making one brilliant, run, beating the whole Canterbury backs, after which ho slipped and fell. The team tired badly in the closing stages, but this was to be expected, considering the ol the game and the fact that the men had not tnd a game for five weeks. The Canterbury team was at its full and the backs gave some fine exhibitions of passing and straight running, often taking the ball the full lengJi of the field, Young, Saunders (2), and Kmc being very prominent. Henley ami Miad■bolt were the pick of the forwards.
