WAIRARAPA HEAVILY DEFEATED BY OTAGO. Br Telegraph—Pres." .Usm-iat.mn. Dunedin, August 28. Tlie iriatch beikeen the Wai'rarapa touring team and Otago was played at tlfe Carlsbrook ground this afternoon before an attendance of over 8000 spectators. The weather was dull, but beautifully fine for football, and IUIO ground wa9 in splendid order. The game proved to bo very one-si<lod, and was entirely dominated by the superiority of the Otago forwards. The ordeal of playing three matches in a week was apparently rather too much for tho North Islanders. The proceedings were brigltyencd by tho presence on tho ground of a number of university students in their capping carnival costumes.
Tollowingi the kick-off, the Otago forwards, headed by Joyce, «t once attaoked, and a couple of scrums took placo on the Wa.irara.pa line, the ball eventually coming out to Carson, who cleared lo half-way. Richardson was prominent in Jin attacking movement, but play returned to half-way, where from a scrum the Otago backs were Bot in motion, "but bad passing nullified Hie effort. From some loost; play, flam marked, and' Edwards hnd an ineffectual shot at 20al. _ A free kick by Turnbull placed Otago in a good attacking position, nmT from a five-yards pcrnm Begg (lashed round and scored, Edwards kicking a goal, and after 10 minutes' play Otago led by five points to nil. The Greon forwards atifneked in turn, and Watson made a good run down th* side-lino and paitned some further ground with a useful line-kick. A freekick lo Greens (Wnirarapa) followed, and they invaded the Otago twentyfivo for tlw first time, but a long kick by Tlegg relieved. Smith marked for Wnirarapa, find some even play followed ar half-way until Patorson transferred operations to the visitors' territory. The second half opened with a brief period of oven play, but Perry, by a pood solo effort, took the bnll well down the field, and it went out at tho corner. Tho Wairarapa forwards agai-n took a turn at the offensive, and Juno made a good opening from which a bright piece or passing among the Green backs enabled i l . Bad passing and weak kicking by the Wairarapa backs enabled Porry to pJck up in lino style and make a nice -opening. Ho transferred to Mackereth just inside half-way, and this player, after running down the side-line, cut in past the fullback and scored the besil individual try of the match, touching down behind tho posts. MARLBOROUGH DEFEAT WELLINGTON,

In the first spell the visitors attacked practically all the timo, with tiho advantage of the sun. A fcaturo of the play was the fine linekicking dono by Brook. It wag a fast, willing game, but the Marlborough play was ragged. There was no score before lialf-t.'uio. In the second Bpell Marlborough, wakened up, repeatedly attacking tho Wellington line. The visitors twico forced. A fine return by Brook brought tho play to midfield. Hamilton then obtained the ball' and after a fine run passed to Cliristophorson, who Bcored, The shot at goal failed. I'lay iiravelled up and down the field, and Marlborough wcro on several occasions narrowly prevented from scoring. From a scrum on the Wellington l.'ne, the ball came out to King, who dropped a beautiful goal. A, minuto afterwards Marlborough were forced into touch in goal. J-ust on iho call of time, from a free kick King unsuccessfully tried at goal. The final scores were: Marlborough, 1; Wellington, 3.

BULLER V. CHRISTCHURCH MARISTS. By Tsliuraph—l'rew Association. Westport, August 28. A Rugby match, Bullcr v. Marist Bros. (Christchurch) was played at Wostport tto-day' : under unfavourable weather conditions, tho ground being heavy and the ball slippery. In tho first spell, playing with the wind, Duller notched eight points (a try scored by O'Neill and converted by Casey, and a penalty goal kicked by Casey), Boi'h sides several times narrowly missed scoring chances. In the second spell, Marists appeared to better advantage, but found the Buller defence very sound. Quick charges turned the defenco again and again into attack. From a serum. Fendergren secured possession rtnd, dodging nitely, scored, but James M'C'ormick failed in convert. Within a minute of the call of time Bullcr pressed hard on the visitors' line, bnt opening out Marists came through, kicking and passing. The Buller backs failing to handle the slippery leather, .1. Fitzgerald scored a try which M'Cormack converted. The came ended with tiho scores level (8 points each). It was a fast, open game, with the players on a heavy ground _ almost run to a standstill in the closing stapes. The Buller forwards wero the better pack, bill: the Marisls backs showed 'lhafc on a fine day they would 1 bo very troublesome. On the day's play Buller had the better of the (wme, prfticipallv because of their aggressive forwards, who on several occasions swept! over tlie visiting team, only to miss scoring by inchrs. The visitors nlso narrowly missed scoring on several occasions.
