TALLOW MARKET

Messrs. A. 11, Turnbull and Co. have received n cable message from Messrs. AV. Weddel and Co., Ltd.. dated London, Aujmst 11, relative to the tallow market reading as follows:—"Market again firmer. Beef tallow, fine mutton tallow, 7!)5., 80s.; mixed tallow, 785.; fair, good beef tallow, lis.. 78s. Messrs. W. Weddel and Co., writing under date London, June IG, to Messrs. A. H. Turnbull and Co., advise as follows:— Meats:. There is very littlo change. During the last 14 days the importers of North and South American and colonial tinned moats have held further meetings in connection with the advertising scheme, which has been carried on in practically the whole of the papers 1 throughout the United Kingdom for four weeks, and it ivas decided to continue to advertise for a further six weeks, but not on such a large scale as before. We understand this advertising has done good, hut so far, we, ourselves, have not felt tho benefit of it. as* the retailer and spinll country wholesaler have been carrying fairly large stocks, nnd naturally will clear these before ordering ngain. We, however, hope to see a better trade in the near future. Tho stocks of 12s. (id. size corned and boiled heef and mutton in the hands of the principal importers total 1,500,000 cases, which in normal pre-war days was equal to a supply for eighteen months, but as the demand here to-day is very small, wo havo sufficient for p. long period unless a demand should develop in the Continent. Extract of meat: Trade quiet. Nominal price is 2s. Gd. per lb. Sheep tongues: We are unable to make headway, and prices are nominally 20a. i per dozen. The demand for sheep tongues Is limjtcd, the consumer preferring jiig's tongues, for which he will pay a considerably higher price.
