AMERICAN RAILWAYS
INCREASES IN CHABGES. (Rec. August 2, 10.30 p.m.) New York, August 1. A rate of increaso totalling 1,500,000,000 dollars Las been granted the American railways by tho Inter-State Commerce Commission, and gives them an operating rovenuo of 1,131,000,000 dollars, or 211,000,000 more than the standard allowed by the Government, and 31,000,000 more than the ronds made during tho best year, Tlio increases are: Freight, 83 per cent.; passongers' excess baggago and milk, 20 per cent.; sleeping berths, 20 per cent. Mr. Walker D. Hines, a former director-general of railways, eays tho increaso will moan a three to fivefold iucrease in tho cost of living, but it nmy bo kept to threefold by rigid Governmental action.—Aus.-N.Z.
