fc — : — OPENING OF CONFERENCE. The National Conference of the New Zealand Labour Party was opened at the Trades Hall, Vivian Street, yesterday. It was the lamest conferonco yet held on tho existing basis of representation. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. J. T. Paul (Dunedin), the vice-president (Mr. P. Eraser, M.P.),'occupied tho chair. In welcoming the delegates, the chairman mads 6peoial reference to the success achieved by Labour at the last General Election. There had been a -vast increase in the number of Labour votes—something like 150 per cent.' He stated that while they might,_ from time to time, alter their methods, in order tip arrive at their goal, that goal—the socialisation of the means of production, distribution and exchange—remained the 6&me. Mr. J. B. 'Williams, a delegate from the Broken Hill Distress Committee, briefly addressed the conference regard- ,, ins the needs of the,committee if the Bufferings of 'starving women and child, ren were to be ameliorated. It was decided to give all support possiblo. . The annual report of the National Executive was adopted, and special subcommittees were chosen to deal with, the following matters: Selection of .Parliamentary candidates, financial position of the party, establishment of a Labour Pre6s. The following remit was passed: "That the Government be asked to ra return of the number of complaints Teported to the Labour Department of breaches of award by. employers, the number of convictions, and the number condoned or simply warned." .
It was decided to ask the Labour Varty to introduce a Bill to provide for the registration of electricians in the some manner as plumbers are registered. Discussion took place on a remit proposing that no member of Pariianvnt shall hold an executive position in tho New Zealand Labour Party. _ The remit •was carried, with the proviso that it should not tale effect until aftet tho annual election next year. The evening was mainly devoted to disounsing important remits. It -was agreed to set up labour representation ■ committees in every electorate In New Zealand.
