PASSING OF A PIONEER
MRS. ELIZA BREWER,
A pioneer of seventy-nine years standing in Wellington, Mrs. Eliza Brewer, died at'the residence of her daughter, Mrs. T. Harlen, at Petone, on AVednesdny morning, at the age of 81 years. The late Mrs. Brewer, who was tho.relict of the late Mr. William Henry Brewer, custodian of Newtown Park for over thirty years came out to Wellington as a child in the ship Martha Ridgway, in the year 1841, and lias therefore been n resident of the place for nearly eighty years. Iftr maiden name was Eliza Harriett Gooden, and her father, and his two brothers, wero passengers on the Martha Ridgway and have descendants in the Wairarapa and other parts of. New Zealand. Mrs. Brewer was among the first settlers who were brought out by the New Zealand Land Company, and one of the Inst documents she was called upon to sign was 'the early settlers' address of welcome to tho Prince of Wales. , Unfortunately, she was confined to her "bed, und was not nblo to be present at the Petone funcMrs.' Brewer leaves a family •of three sons and five daughters.' The sons are Messrs. G. Brewer, L. Brewer (custodian of Nowtown Park), and A. Brower (custodian of the Basin and the daughters are Mesdames T. Harlen, Ryan, and Jones (all of Petone), Richards, and Eden (of Wellington). The funeral is to leave Petone for Wellington at 1.30 p.m. to-day. , The interment will b© made in tho Bolton Street Cemetery. ' ■
