AMERICAN CHAMPION 'DEFEATED \ BY PARKE. London, June 22. Everybody was surprised that Parke beat Johnston, who was considered Patterson's most dangerous opponent. Thb scores were 7—5, 2—6, G—2, 8-G. Parke rose to his topmost form.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Rec. June 23, 10.5 p.m.) ■ London, Juno 22. In the second round Laurentz beat Raymond, Brugnou (France) beat Gore, Beamish beat Milford, Shimidzu beat Lowe, Williams beat Bonstead, ,Davson beat Dixon, Gobert beat Owen, Mavrcgordato beat Fisher, Lycett beat Sir G. A. Thomas, Zerlendi beat Malmstrom. an additional first round winner was Doußt. . . . ■ .

Patterson, in an interview, said that Johnston's defeat adds new interest to the ohampionßhips, inasmuch as it is now much more doubtful who will he the challenger. Patterson has not yet seen all the players and is unable to suggest tho likeliest opponent.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assr.

[The defeat of Johnston, the American ohampion, by Parke (England) is of particular interest in view of the coming Davis Cup games. Johnston is regarded as the strongest man in the American team, whereas. Parke, who in oneof the British team, has not played first-olass tennis for the past few years owing to war injuries. Parke was mainly responsible for tho British team regaining tho Davis Cup: from Australasia shortly beforo the war started. He and Johnston are both great back line players, with tremendous power and depth in their drives, and the match just ended in Parko's favour-' would probably have been productive of some of the finest driving ever seen at Wimbledon.!
