THE TRAGEDY AT TATU

CONTRADICTORY REPORTS.

By Telegraph-Press Association,

Taumarunui, June 16. The reports concerning the gelignite explosion at Tatu'nre still very meagre and contradictory. Tho only definite information the police have received is that an explosion of gelignite occurred (but it is not definitely known how), and that Mrs. England, her infant eon, and Miss Lilburn were killed. ' . Reliable information has been received by telephone from a resident of Ohura, to the effect that Mr. England put a packet of gelignite in front of the firs to dry and went away to milk cows. An explosion occurred, and it is thought that the woman put the. gelignite on tho stove. Mrs. England was blown out of the back door and expired in a few minutes after the arrival of the doctor. Miss Lilburn was in a separate room when the explosion occurred, and her body and that of the infant were buried under tho ruins of the house, which waa practically wrecked. Tho stove waa blown to pieces. ' Tho deceased persons were the only ones in the house. The explosion occurred between 8 and 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning. The very frosty night on Monday probably made the gelignite exceptionally' sensitive to heat.
