BOWLS

THE WELLINGTON CENTRE

ANNUAL MEETING

. There was fairly full representation of delegates present at the annual meeting of the Wellington Bowling Centre, held last evening. The chair was occupied by the president (Mr. George Hendry). The annual report and balance-sheet (a precis of which has appeared) was adopted on the motion of the chairman, who said that it disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs. The Upper Hutt Club had defaulted. No answer had been received to communications, so he assumed tho club was defunct. Mr. J. R. Robertson thought that reference to the services of Mr. J. J. Roberts. who was secretary and treasurer for seven years, should have been included in TSie report. The chairman read n letter from Mr. Roberts on tho same point. On the motion of Mr. Robertson, seconded by Mr. E. J. Hill, a paragraph was ineertcU in the report of Mr. Robwts's sccvices to the centre, and to bowls'generally. ' ' ■ Mr. F. North, referring to the annual tournament, said that he was of opinion that entries for the tournament should 1m confined to members of clubs affiliated to the centre. That opinion was held by many players of different clubs, and he would move in that direction at the proper time. The election of officers resulted as follows :-President, Mr, 1?. Meadowcroft; vice-president, Mr. M. • .Hodgins; hon. treasurer, Mr. W. H. Morrah; hon. auditor, Mr. E. A. Liddle; executive, the delegates of the various affiliated clubs. Nominations for Council of the New Zealand Bowline; Association: President, Mr. T. Bush; vice-president, nominee of tho Dunedin Cento; treasurer, Mr. A. E. Fowler; councillors, Messrs. T. Gray, J. J. Roberts, and F. Meadowcroft. The usual bonus to the secretary was granted, on the motion of Mr. F. Meadovrcroft. Mr. W. H. Morrah (treasurer) refused a bonus that was offered him. Champion of Champions Games,. A 6ulK»mmittee, consisting of Messrs. 'Hendry, Meadowcroft, E. J. Hill, and S. Underwood, reported as follows Tespcctins the champion of champions games: "The ascertained club champion of champions shall be understood to mean the player or players who has or have played through with, most wins or series of competitions games carried out by his or their clubs, for the purpose with a minimum number of games as under:— Tn a club with a membership up to and including 25 members, 3 games; 26 to 50 members,, 4 games; 51-75 members, 5 games; 76 members and upwards, K games. As for permitting substitutes we recommend that the centre shall penniti: (a) In rinks, one substitute, who shall not skip; (b) in pairs, one substitute who shall bo either lead or skip (as needed) from the runners up in that club's competition; (c) in singles, not substitute." Mr. Robertson (Petone) found some obiection in the case of the full rinks, because of the difficulties his cliiib had found in getting off a rink competition. He could foreseo that it would'not be difficult for a. rink to sneak home who were not by any means the best rink_ in the club, whereas by selecting a rink the centre could depend on a club sending a strong rink to compete in the champW of champions game. Air. E. J. Hill said it may ,be that weak teams or teams thought to bo weah had come through and won. More power to them. They had proved themselves the best players for the year in competition, and were fully entitled to represent their club. Messrs. M. Hodgins. (Hutt), S. Underwood'(Newtown), and H. Smith (Wellington) were fully in accor,d with the new proposal. Mr. Jacobs (John6onvi]le) argued m favour of two substitutes in; the case oi rinks. ' Mr. .Hill 6aid that if that were given effect to it would leave a, loophole for "faking" the rink, and tiwy would not get the real champion rink; of a club. .The report was adopted. The Centre Tournament, Mr. J. North'moved that the annual centre tournament be confined to members of clubs affiliated to .'the centre. He instanced the win of the/ Ponsonby rink last season, where an outside rink hod. won their own centre tourney, a. position which he thought was absurd. ' Mr. Roberfeon, who seconded the motion pro forma, thought that the point should bo made a remit to the Dominion Council. • ~ „ ~ , ■ Mr. Underwood thought it would bt> better, to leave Ifche matter to the annual meetings of clubs for a direction to the centre* Mr. Hill expressed the hope .that tno clubs would not reto tho present order of ithings. He was tho chief, sufferer last senson, but all tno same he welcomed to Wellington such a. rink as Maxwell Walker's, and he hoped that in;the future they would havo many such rinks visit their tournaments,' Mr. North held.to hisj motion, and Mr. Underwood moved as ni) amendment that "the matter be referred ,to the clubs. The amendment was carried with one dissentient, and the nioiion was defeated, only the mover voting for it. • ; The retiring officers.were given a vote of thanks for their good work during

the year. WELLINGTON CLUB. .
