A HANDSOME ADDRESS

. : — *~. —- FOR ME. N. M'NICOL. To-day the Chief Stewards' Guild are to present Mr. N. M'Nicol ■ (Chief of Stores at Wellington for the Union S.S. Company for many years, and who has recently retired), with a *ery handsome illuminated address. The address consists of two pages of vellum, most beautifully illuminated by Messrs. Palmer and Mapood. Into the border at the top tag been worked the flags of the U.S.S. Company and tho British Merchant Service, whilst pendant from tho chief initial letter is a facsimile of the hadge of tho guild. At.the foot of the front page are beautiful little water colour paintings of tfcD Eotomahana and Wakatimi, with which vessels Mr. M'Nicol wn6 associated for many years. The address, which is bound in dark purple Persian leather, 'with tho recipient's initials stamped in gold on the outside, reads as follows:— "To Mr. N. M'Nicol, Chief Superintendent Steward, Union Steam Ship Company,. Wellington.—Dear Sir,—We, the members of the Chief Stewards' Guild of New Zealand, feel that wo cannot allow'tho occasion of your retiring from service to pass unrecognised by us, 'and we dfßiro to take this opportunity of conveying to you our congratulations on your record of lengthy service now completed, and the high estcom in which!' you aro held by your brother stewards. J'ho capable manner in which you havo controlled the various important positions y'/ii have been called on to administer—tho outcome of your long and varied experienced-will no doubt be rewarded by the knowledge that you leave (behind a record of service which will servo as an examplo and a stimulus to others. Forty-four years ago you joined tho service of the Union- Company, and have since served under, their flag, tiidrty6ix years of which have' been spent ashore. Although your length of service entitled you to retire earlier, ttlo fact that you remained nt your duties since, thb outbreak of war and watched over tho arrival and departure of the many rod-funnel vessels, more often than in normal times, is but anothor tribute to thoso fine qualities with which you nro ondowed. and also reflects credit on the guild. The Chief Stewards' Guild is united in wishing both jou and Mrs. M'Nicol all happiness and prosperity for the futuro years."
