Mr. E. Page, S.M. presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Michael Gray Higglns pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a eold brooch, value 30s„ tho proporty of Borne perioil unknown. It was shown in evldente that tho acoused pawned tho brooch for Ss„ and gave a false-name and address to the Sawnbroker.'-" When scon by a. constable o also gave false Information. The'accused in evidence said he bought , the brooch from a jeweller in Auckland, nnd eavo £2 16s. for it. He aid pawn tho brooch, but ha could not mako out vliy he gave a false name. Higgins was convictod and fined £5, in default one plinth's imprisonment, A plea of guilty was entered by Charles Lewis, who was charged wiili the theft tf £4 in money, tliS property of William Kostlo, also tho theft of a vatch and leather chain, and lOe. in money, the property of Alexander Prince. Lewis, who was a hawker of laces, went to Levin anil Co.'s" store, and stole the gdcffls and incney from tho pookets of clonics lufging up. He was sentenced to two months' imprisonment on »acli charge, the terms to bo concurrent.
A rVuand to Friday was granted lii tho case of Jesse James Coombs charged, with the theft of a gold bangle, and a gold ncck-chain. • ■ Yiolct Watson was fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment, tin her filth conviction for drunterncSs, and & 'Imllar fine was inflicted on her for committing ti breach of her prohibition order.
