Mr. C. A. 'Biven on Saturday provided | a Dominion representative with some in-1 teresting facts with regard to the subur-1 ban trams on the ilutt line. Mr. Ewen possesses a time-table which was in u»o in January, 1879, and when compared with the tiniq-table of to-day, it diecloses tho fact that, although a double line has been laid between Wellington and Lower Hutt, and a consideralile amount of money lins been spent in tilling in part of tlio harbour to shorten tho route, the time occupied for the journey is nearly the same. In 1879 a train leit Wellington at 7.4(1 a.m., arriving at ttlo Upper Hutt at 8.4-5. thus taking Co minutes. A train to-day leaves at and arrives at 8.17, the time occupied in the journey being 59 minutes.. J. lie average time in 1879 was 65 minutes, and the shortest 55. The average time to-day, 40 odd years later,'is about 6minutes. The AVairarapa express, which leaves Lambton at 7.50 a.m., and arrive* at Upper Hutt at. 8.3G, takes « minute-. This is only 9 minutes faster than in 1879. Tho Sunday train, wmc,i left Lambton in. 1879 at 9.40 a.m.,. took b3 minutes on the journey. The tram to-day leaving at 9.10 takes CO minutes.
