HOME RULE BILL

AMENDMENTS ASKED FOR

TO SECURE FUNDAMENTAL UNITY

NEARER APPROACH TO DOMINIONS' STATUS By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright London, May 24. A deputation of responsible persons interested in the settlement of the Irish problem interviewed the Acting-Chief Secrotary (Mr. Walter Long) at tho House of Commons. Tho deputation expressed its belief in tho Government's, good intentions, but asked for generous amendments to the Home Rulo Bill, whoreby fundamental unity would be more clearly asserted. The speakors were of tho opinion that tho Irish Parliament should include bicameral Legislatures for both divisions of Ireland, of which tho Upper Houses of each should constitute a Council of Ireland invested with wider and more unreserved powers than at present provided. They suggested that the amount of tho Irish contribution to tho Imperial Government be left to tho Irish Legislatures as in the case of the Dominions, and suggested other alterations by -which tho status of Ireland woiild more closely resemble that of the Dominions. Mr. Long, in replying. 6howed that the Government's task was rendered more difficult through lack of criticism, owing to the abstention of tho Nationalists, and the withdrawal of the Labourites from the House of Commons. Referring to the increase in crime in Ireland, Mr. Long said that Englishmen were liable to regard the concessions to Irish opinion as yielding to tho forces of outrage. He undertook to submit the deputation s proposals to Cabinet.-Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Router.
