DROUGHT STRICKEN AUSTRALIA
NO RAIN ON THE DARLING FOR TWO YEARS.
Conditions 111 the drought-stricken areas ci New South Wales are described in a letter received recently iby a correspondent from the manager of a sheep etatioa.on the Darling River, who writes: i 'This part of the country is in a fearful state owing- to the drought, which is the worst ever experienced in this country. Some stations linvo lost tho whole of the stock they had, and scores of stations have closed down, not having even enough water left on them to keep a caretaker to look after tho homestead. Australia will be millions of sheep and cattle short when the drought breads. We have liad practically no rain for two years. Tor the last twelve months we have had 95 points of rain in eleven falls, so you can form an idea of the state of things in the back country. Tho cost of living 19 tremendous, as, for example, a 1501b. bng of flour costs us £1 landed up here. Drapery is dreadfully dear, and I often wonder how some of the people in tho towns live. You can't get even a fair suit of clothes made under «£ls over here."
