STEAMSHIP CHARGES
| RISE IN-FARES AND FREIGHTS. The shipping companies announce a pending increase in fares and freight rates. The increased rate on coastal general cargo will be.4s. pe'r.ton, and thnc on coastal produce 3s. per ton. The new rates will operate from May 1. The increase in the passenger fare? will be brought' about by a discontinuance .of the issue.. of return tickets. Single!tickets only will lie issued at the .present, single rates.. The single fare to Lytteltoiv' will tints'- be: Saloon 21s?, steerage 12s. Cd. Tile iucrease will operate from next-Monday. A similar system will be adopted on nil the coastal rups, but will not operate until thero is a readjustment of the Bcrvicc, Th» shipping companies explain that there has been no increase in'the coastal rates 6ince April, 1917, since when cubstantial increases have been granted to seamen and watersiders. The companies liad also been called upon to pay considerably more for bunker coal and all general stores,
