ISLAND BAY SCHOOL

The report for the year shows the school is making headway in ■ all departments. , The committee ioped to • have been able to show progress in the formation of the new playing area, but the shortage of labour offering for this class of work in the reason given why no commencement has been made. The board 6omo months ago entered into an agreement with a firm'to do the work, and the committee trust a change in conditions will come about that will enable the children j to get the use of the .playing area that they are entitled to. The school came through the annual examination with good 'results, and in addition to a good return of free place passes; two scholarships were won. AUwyn Charles Keys and David J. B. HaHey being the winners. On the sports side, in cricket the intermediate championship came to the school. In football the school team, were runners-up in the Association competitions and winnerß in the six-a-side tournament. In tonniß Ferkins won .the championship singles in the public school tournament, and in the doubles tho school team were runners-up. At the sports meeting held in connection with. ,tho school, picnic, Doris Taaker ', proved to be the champion runner on tho ; ;girls' side, and Roy Thomas on the boys'. In Bwimming Jean Bruce iB the champion girl and lan MNIco! champion boy. On Wednesday next, at the annual meeting of •householders, Mr. R. A. Wright,- M.P., will present the medals to the champions, and aIBO to the scholarship winners. With • the district' growing aa it ia. the sohool attendance is increasing, and is now making, towards the 700 mark.' The retiring .committee thank the teaching staff for tho good work done. Thirteen nominations for the new committee have been received. '
