SWIMMING
SPORTS AT TEPID BATHS
GREAT RACE FOR JUNIOR ' \ CHAMPIONSHIP
There was a big gathering of swim- j ming enthusiasts around the tepid baths ] in tho Boys' Instituto building on Saturday night _ to witness the last of • tho season's swimming carnivals. The events, which were of a diversified order, were got off under tho auspices of the Wellington Swimming Centre. The principal attraction was the 100 yds. New Zealand junior championship. This event was recently held nt Auckland, but on account of a protest lodged by Dalton, the Canterbury swimmer, being upheld, the New Zealand Swimming Council" decided that it would have to bo re-swum. Baird and Bailey, the two Auckland competitors, did not undertake the trip to Wellington, and tin's left only two entrants in the race—Dalton and Claridge, of -Wellington. These two lads fought out a magnificent finish. Together they left the board,. and they kept abreast of each oilier until after the last turn had been rounded, when Claridge gradually forged ahead' and won by nearly a yard. Another, feature of the meeting was an aquatic tng-of-war, the first of its kind to be pulled off in the Dominion. The ovont provided great amusement, and doubtless next season it will he repeated at many swimming sports. AVater polo also figured on the programme—its first revival since the war.
