CLOSER SETTLEMENT
LANDS FOR SELECTION
STATEMENT BY THE HON. D. GUTHRIE
During the month of March an area of 65,300 acres of land subdivided into 81 holdings was opened for selection by cischarged soldiers. Included in this total wero two pastoral runs in Canterbury, of an aggregate area of 40,000 acres suitable for grazing, 24 holdings of a total area 0f.3528 acres suitable for general agricultural purposes, and the remainder was principally mixed farming and dairying land. During the present month, according to the Hon. D. Guthrie, Minister of Lands, approximately 28,000 acres will be available, being subdivided into 76 farms, and in addition a small grazing run. of 7100 acres in Otago will also bo put on the market. These farms are situated in various parts of the Dominion and are all' subdivisions of privato properties acquired by the Land Purchase Board und-H- the Lands, for Settlement Act. Tho lands necessarily vary in quality and price, but a reference to tho monthly poster issued by the Lands Department will show that provision has been made to meet the wishes of all classes of the fanning community, and it is anticipated that the majority of tho holdings will bo readily taken nu. It might also be mentioned, said Mr. Guthrie, that early in May the Tuturumuri Settlement, situated in the Wairarana district, recently, acquired from Mr. V.'Hiddiford, and comprising an area of 6162 acres of grazing country, will bo offerel by ballot. This settlement has bee-i subdivided into eleven holdings, tho areis of which vary from 300 to 000 acres. The following settlements will also bo offered during the next. month:— Marlborough, Moorlands Settlement, 963 acres, subdivided into six farms. Canterbury: Springwell, 870 acres, subdivided into six sections, and Otago: Wairuna and Tilverstowo Settlements, of a total area of 8800 acres, comprising 20 sections. In addition two largo grazing runs wil'/ also bo offered in the Otago district. Large areas of Crown lands arc also im-liT survey, but although at present it is not possible to fix a date for their opening they will bo offered from time to time; for instance, the surveyors are now surveying 156,073 acres in tho Auckland land district alone. From the foregoing, concluded Mr. Guthrie, it will be seen that the Government's policy of closer settlement is ■being vigorously carried out. It is scarcely necessary to add that all the lands mentioned are available' for selection by discharged soldiers only.
