THE PRINCE'S VISIT
CHILDREN TO BE CONSIDERED
BANNERS AND SOUVENIR CARDS ' Ther> was a conference between the Finance Committee of the City Council and Mr. J. G. Harkness (chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board), Captain Dawson (harbourmaster), Mr. H. Tj. NichoMs (secretary), and Captain Halo Munro (clref whnrfinjer) in the Mayor's room on Saturday morning, respecting matters concerning the visit if the Prince of Wales to Wellington. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), who occupied the chair, said that tho obi'i'ct of tlio conference concerned tho school children, with whom it was desired that tho visit of His Poyal Highness should be l .ado memorable. Tho proposal was that, in addition to what the Government was doing for the children in providing transport and food, the council and the board should provide each of the 3ohools with a banner, which would not only be flown by the school children on the day the Prince insnected them (May 5). but would identify each. school . with the Prince for many rears to come, the banners to be worked" out in various designs in the colours of the various schools. Another feature proposed. was the presentation of each child with a souvenir card which would be a lasting reminder of an historical event of no littlo importance to.the citizens of to-morrow. He had no wish- to embarrass the funds already granted for specific purpo?,-«, and wished the co-operation of the board in providing .£SOO (£250 from each body) to defray the cost of tho banners anS cards.
Mr. .T. G. Harkness was in full accord with ths proposal, which he ai:'d woirld adequately impress on the minds of th? children the visit of the Prince, and, providing the Government would validate the grant, he was nrepared to ask the board to agree to the proposal.
Mr. T. Forsyth, chairman of the Education Board, who has actively urged tho case of the children, was gratified by the ready acquiescence of the Mayor and chairman of the board, and expressed his thanks to them.
In tho case of the souvenir cards, children, whether attending publio or private schools, nro to receive these souvenirs, and it is understood that 31 largo banners (for the big schools) and ten smaller banners (for tho sinaiUer schools) will lie made in time for thei? disnlay on May .5.
On that occasion tho children from tho suburbs are to be conveyed (fr?e of cost) in the trams to Lnmbton Ouay, and tho children from tb.9 city schools (such as Thorndon. the Terrace, Willis Street Mt. Cook, and Clvdo Quay) will assemble at given > points in Bunny Street, Hill Street, and Sydney Street, so that tho processions through tha streets will be avoided, as tho ordinary traffic of sight-seers is likely to be heavy.
GOVERNMENT ACTIVITY. The TJnder-S'cretary of. Internal Affair;(Mr. J. Hislop) states that the Government will undertake the decoration of Dufferin and Rugby Streets in the vicinity of the Government House entrance. The scheme of decoration will co-ordinate, with that which the Streets Decoration Committee is carrying out.
The arrangements for the Maori camp at Eotorua are well ahead, according to the Hon. Sir W. H. Hemes (Minister of Native Affairs). There was accommodation for GOOO Maoris, and the Natives were making their own arrangements. The hakas and Native ceremonies with which tho Prince of, Wales would lie welcomed were being rehearsed by tho Maoris in their ov«n pas at present.
