THE PRICE OF BOOTS
Sir,—"Purchaser No. 2" says "figures liave been quoted officially, showing that Australian 'boots were landed in New Zealand, duty paid, at 265. per pair, while. New Zealand boots of similar class, but not quito » well finished,.cost 28s. _ This has not been questioned." I wish I could find Parliamentary language strong enough to convey to "Purchaser No. 2 what I think of his wilful perversion of facts. I have continuously questioned this statement, which was a general, and not an "official," one. The endeavour to iiinko it an official ono is on a par with otlis-r statements mado by "Purchaser No. 2." On his other statement, which ho says has not been questioned, that certain people buv Australian boots because tli?y like them better, who can question taste, or preference, in matters of dress or anything else? . As regards the amount of hide required to make a pair of heavy men's boots, my statement has to stand Beard of Irado investigation, and was made with that knowledge; it was also mado at tho Hide Conference, and although' there were representatives them of all interests, it was unchallenged. . . Tho question of tho price at winch boots are retailed' is a new issue, and does not concern me as a manufacturer. There is a Boot Retailers' Association in Wellington, and the president a fewweeks ago said no manufacturer could represent their interests. Probably he can help "Purchaser No. 2" m his di-jlemma.-I^an.etc^^^^^
